Tri Gulf Coast will host an end of season party on Friday evening, November 20, 2009. Location is tentatively Seville Quarter (End of the Alley Courtyard or Lili Marlenes). The club will provide "some" drinks and hors d'oeuvres. We should be able to congratulate several members who have finished Iron distances races this year.
We will also be holding elections for officers and elections for our two annual awards. PLEASE SUBMIT ME NOMINATIONS FOR THE OFFICERS AND THE AWARDS so we can have a vote. Officer positions vacant will be President, Vice-president, Treasurer, and two board members. The two awards are Triathlete of the Year and Charlie Knight Memorial Volunteer of the Year. Past winners are: Triathlete of the Year--Brian Casey, Wendy Ellis, Cheri Epstein, Mark Sortino; Volunteer of the Year--Stephen Hancock, Paolo Ghio, Steven Fair. Nominations due by November 17.
More details to come. Brian Casey

Fellow TriGulfCoast Members,
Sunday we had over 50 athletes turn out for the Members Only Practice Tri at Pensacola Beach. We swam, biked, and ran under near perfect conditions and were treated to refreshments and drinks afterwards by Charles Gheen and the Santa Rosa Island Triathlon. We also picked up about 10 new members!
This coming Sunday, September 27, will be the final Mere Mortals workout before the STR Tri. Jay Yanovich, USAT Official, will be giving his annual rules seminar. If you make any workout this year, you need to make this one if you plan on racing on October 3. Not only will attending this seminar keep you from getting into foul trouble and getting penalized, it can also keep you from getting hurt, or at least from getting yelled at by another irate triathlete!
After Jay is finished, I will be going over final race preprations--that is, what you need to do between Sunday morning and Saturday morning to ensure you are ready to race. After that, we will have a short workout, 12 miles on the bike and 2 miles on the run.
I would like to thank all of you who came out to particpate and assist this years practices. I will not be at this Sundays workout, but if you want to know more about the rules, this is the weekend.
Good luck, see you guys at the swim start!
Steven Fair

Thanks VERY Much and we appreciate your support.

Jennifer Hanley-Pinto, former Double Bridge Run champion, is racing also as she heads the following week to Kona for the Ironman World Championship.

The Mere Mortal's practice tri day has been moved to September 20th. We'll use the same course as the SRI Tri course, so we'll meet at the Pensacola Beach Casino Pavillion. Transition will open at 6:30 a.m., and the practice tri will start at 7:00 a.m. Afterwards, we'll meet at a local diner for breakfast. Details to be discussed on the 20th. Remember, you must be a member of the Mere Mortals to participate.
The SRI TRI organization will provide refreshments during and after the practice tri. Race director Charles Gheen says, "It'll be something substantial because I know how triathletes love to eat and drink and, also, drink!"
SRI TRI and Running Wild are having a triathlon clinic the day before the practice tri at Running Wild on Cervantes on September 19th from 11:00 to 3:00. There will be excellent instruction on triathlon, as well as door prizes and special discounts on all merchandise if you sign up for the SRI TRI that day at the store.

Great news from Mere Mortals on Sunday, July 5th. We had an Ann Knight sighting! It was good to see Ann up and about, although not working out yet. Ann--we have all prayed for you and followed your illness and recovery, and were glad to see you on Sunday.
Otherwise, we had 22 people show up Sunday, which is pretty good for a 4th of July weekend. We swam about 1,000 to 1,200 yards or so, then ran over the Bob Sikes bridge and back.
Paid members are all now (as of 7/1/09) covered with accident and liability insurance during any organized Tri Gulf Coast events.
Thanks to all who have volunteered to help with the Spirit of ADA 5K Run. I now need some more runners! Please come on out to Pensacola Beach on July 18th and help me raise some money for the spinal cord injured in our area. Also, bring a friend or family member to run or walk with you. Let's try to put together some Tri Gulf Coast teams to compete for the club trophies!
A team of five can register for $80, a savings of $20 to $45 over regular or late registration costs. Trophies will go to the top male, female, and mixed (coed) teams. Let's show those other clubs that triathletes are good runners too! Stay after the race to claim your medals or trophies and party at the Sandshaker. For more information, go to the Pensacola Runner's Association website or email me at bcasey1@bellsouth.net, or call me at 261-1779.
Hope to see you all this weekend,
Brian

We had 46 new and old members show up for our first session of Mere Mortals on Sunday, June 28th. July 5th will be a training day, with a swim/run on the schedule.
Our website has a new webmaster, Jake Renfroe, who has volunteered his services graciously. He has begun working and has the 2009 Mere Mortals schedule up. In case you aren't aware, the URL is www.trigulfcoast.org, and you can also go to the Tri GulfCoast Facebook Page for info and updates.
As of yesterday, all paid up members have supplemental accident and liability insurance for any occurrences during club activities. Let's hope we never have to use it. But, that's another good reason to pay your dues!
Thanks to the members who volunteered to help me put on the first annual Spirit of ADA 5K Run on July 18th. I am still looking for more, so if you can help, let me know at bcasey1@bellsouth.net.
See you Sunday (with all your fingers)!
Brian
